Man Utd's total transfer budget for Erik ten Hag with Ralf Rangnick overhaul in doubt

Manchester United's total budget that Erik ten Hag can utilise can be bolstered by several players leaving this summer.

Ralf Rangnick has told the club that they will need to make wholesale changes to the squad in the transfer window to have any chance of competing with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City. The German coach will step aside at the end of the season to move into a consultancy role.

There are a number of players who could be on their way out this summer, including those whose contracts expire such as Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani and Juan Mata. United will not see a penny come the other way, though.

But Old Trafford chiefs have told Ten Hag that they will not overhaul the squad, despite Rangnick's protestations where he said that as many as 10 players will need to be signed. According to ESPN, the club supremos will tell the Dutchman that they want evolution - not revolution.

A summer budget of up to £150million will be granted - though with some of the prices being quoted already, that will not get very far. However, player sales could take the total up to £230m.

Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Anthony Martial, Alex Telles and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have all been put up for sale this summer and have a total combined value of £80m, via Transfermarkt. By offloading those that have been marginalised, Ten Hag will be able to bring in some quick cash.

Rangnick has been left shocked by the poor standard of scouting and recruitment at United since his arrival in November, when he succeeded Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Prior to the 4-0 defeat to Liverpool, the German coach explained how life is different in the Bundesliga.

"In Germany we have a head coach and then there is usually a minimum of two skilled people continuously in the club on a longer-term basis responsible for recruitment, scouting and any daily operation," he said last week.

"They also bring in the right and best possible head coach for the team. This still hasn't got a big tradition here and so the job of a sporting director or director of football - only a few clubs have that.

"I know that for the future, and I think even more so for a big club like Manchester United, you can't put all those jobs and tasks and the whole responsibility only on the shoulder of one person - on the manager. I'm not sure if this can be dealt with by one person, no matter how good he is.

"I know Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea also have smart people who take care of recruitment, scouting, the medical department… I think this is also an issue for our club, where they have to pay attention to."
