Man Utd's remarkable bonus payments to Ajax for Lisandro Martinez revealed

Manchester United will pay Ajax a staggering £56,000 bonus every time Lisandro Martinez plays for the club.

United have handed the Amsterdam giants £48.3million for the 24-year-old Argentine defender plus a package of add-ons worth £8.5million. But the deal is structured so that Ajax will cash in for every appearance Martinez makes for the Reds up to a maximum of 30 games-per-season.

United will hand over a further 66,000 euros when Martinez plays - which works out at just under £56,000. It means United could pay £1.7million per year during the duration of Martinez's initial five-year contract.

He has signed a deal worth £120,000-a-week, with the option of a further 12-month extension. United agreed to the package of extra payments to beat Arsenal to the signature of the versatile Argentina international.

The Gunners had two bids rejected for Martinez before United agreed to match Ajax’s asking price. Martinez is in the United squad to face Atletico Madrid in Oslo tomorrow after his arrival was sealed too late for him to fly out for the recent pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

Ten Hag made him a priority signing after taking over at Old Trafford. The Dutchman signed Martinez for Ajax in 2019 and has helped him develop into an accomplished operator. Martinez made it clear that his heart was set on joining Ten Hag in Manchester.

He said: “It's an honour to join this great football club. I've worked so hard to get to this moment and now that I'm here I'm going to push myself even further. I've been lucky enough to be part of successful teams in my career and that's what I want to continue at Manchester United.

“There will be a lot of work to get to that moment, but I firmly believe that under this manager and coaches, and together with my new teammates, we can do it. I want to thank Ajax and their fans for all the support they gave me.

"I had an unbelievable time there but feel the moment is right to test myself in another environment. Now I am at the perfect club to do that.”
