Man Utd's Casemiro transfer could lead to Scott McTominay exit as four clubs do battle

Manchester United ’s move for Casemiro could see Scott McTominay leave the club this summer, with a number of clubs already interested in his services.

The Red Devils have announced that they have agreed terms with Real Madrid for a £59m swoop for the Brazilian international and he is set to pen a four-year deal at Old Trafford. His arrival gives Erik ten Hag much-needed midfielder reinforcements with the club having previously chased the signatures of both Barcelona ’s Frenkie de Jong and Adrien Rabiot of Juventus.

Casemiro’s signing could also potentially see United reshuffle their midfield department - Scottish international McTominay thought to be among those who could leave the club in the near future.

The Red Devils’ academy graduate is set to be pushed down the pecking order at Old Trafford with a number of Premier League clubs monitoring his situation should he elect to leave. As per 90min, Newcastle United, Everton and Leicester City are all keeping a close eye on the midfielder, whilst David Moyes’ West Ham United are also reported to have joined the race for his services.

It remains to be seen if United boss Erik ten Hag will greenlight a move for the 25-year-old between now and September’s deadline. He handed McTominay a place in the starting line-up in the 2-1 opening day defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion before dropping him to the bench against Brentford. He did however make an appearance after the break, with the Red Devils already 4-0 down in West London.

McTominay has managed to accumulate 172 appearances for United since making his debut during the 2016/17 season, scoring 16 goals in that time. The 34-time Scottish international still has just under three years left to run on his current contract with the club.

He has already received criticism from United icon Paul Scholes for his inconsistent showings alongside Fred in the heart of the side’s midfield. Speaking after the opening day defeat to Brighton, he said: “McTominay was always trying to run with the ball, ridiculous. The quality in the middle of the pitch was really poor.

“I was happy he didn’t get sent off but I think he was slightly lucky. Again, he’s running with the ball rather than passing it, absolutely ridiculous.

“It could easily have been a red card. The quality in the middle of the pitch was nowhere near good enough but we’ve seen that for the last few years with these two players.

“With Fred and McTominay, he [Ten Hag] is going to have to play just one of them but even one of them is probably too many.

“Fred gives the ball away all the time and McTominay’s trying to run with the ball constantly and then gives it away. Pass it to your best players! It’s not that difficult. It’s criminal on a day like today.”
