Man Utd's 5 transfer alternatives to Jonathan Clauss after 'advanced talks' claim fails

Manchester United ’s summer transfer window has so far not gone as expected.

Following a thoroughly underwhelming 2021/22 campaign in which the Red Devils finished sixth, they were expected to be busy in the market. So far, three deals have been agreed with Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez arriving from Feyenoord and Ajax respectively, whilst Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen has penned a contract at Old Trafford.

More is expected though and they were expected to seal the services of French defender Jonathan Clauss having previously been in ‘advanced talks’ over a deal. He has instead completed a move to Ligue 1 giants Marseille.

Mirror Sport takes a look at five alternatives that Man Utd could turn to now that option is off the table.

Kyle Walker-Peters

Already linked with a move to Old Trafford, the English right-back already has plenty of experience of Premier League football having graduated from Tottenham Hotspur’s academy before a move to Southampton.

The 25-year-old has caught the eye on the South Coast over recent seasons, with the Red Devils among the admirers. A move would be an expensive one though with the Saints having already placed a £40m price tag on their star defender.

Tyriq Lamptey

Another exciting young full-back currently plying his trade in the Premier League, Lamptey made his first ventures into senior football with Chelsea. Having seen a path to the first team blocked, he made a move to Brighton & Hove Albion and has since sparkled at the AMEX Stadium.

A serious injury did halt his progress somewhat but he soon regained his place in the Seagulls’ starting XI, with his lung-busting runs forward becoming a particularly potent weapon for Graham Potter. Like Walker-Peters, he has been linked with a move to Man Utd and their top-six rivals.

Sergino Dest

A defender once again in the attacking mould, American international Dest is another to have been rumoured to be under consideration at Old Trafford. The Barcelona star is reportedly among a number of names who could be set to leave the Camp Nou this summer.

Any move to Man Utd would see the 21-year-old be reunited with Ten Hag - the Dutchman having managed the defender with Dutch club Ajax for a season before his switch to Spain.

Jurrien Timber

One of the more unlikely options this summer, Jurrien Timber has of course been linked with a switch to Man Utd earlier this summer. The young Dutchman is another to be schooled with Ajax having won the Eredivisie title during the most recent campaign.

A deal looks like a really difficult task though with the latest reports suggesting that he is on the verge of penning a new deal in Amsterdam.

Malo Gusto

A recommendation directly from the Mirror Sport offices, Lyon’s Gusto could potentially be an excellent option. The 19-year-old enjoyed a breakout campaign in Ligue 1 last term.

He is an extremely creative option down the right flank having led his age range for expected assists during the 2021/22 campaign. Whilst there are no links between Gusto and United as of yet, it would not be a surprise to see him added to the club’s transfer shortlist at some point in the near future.
