Man Utd revelation made over Nottingham Forest star ahead of World Cup

Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams turned down Manchester United as a youngster in favour of joining Liverpool, it has been revealed.

The defender joined the Anfield club at the age of eight, making his way through the youth sides. He made his first team debut in the EFL Cup fourth round tie against Arsenal in October 2019, going on to make his league debut later that season after the break for the Coronavirus outbreak.

After making a total of 33 appearances for Liverpool, Williams completed a move to Forest in the summer. He has featured in every Premier League game so far this season.

After breaking into the first team at Liverpool, the now Forest man also made his mark on the international stage. He made his debut for Wales just months after his Liverpool bow and scored his first goal in just his second international appearance.

Williams, along with Forest teammate Brennan Johnson, are expected to be among the Wales squad travelling to Qatar for the World Cup in just a matter of days. The nation kick off the tournament against USA on Monday, November 21.

Ahead of making the journey both the full-back’s mother and father have reflected on his journey to representing Wales in the World Cup. His father Lee revealed that Williams had a decision to make over two clubs when he was just eight years old.

"By eight he had a decision to make, to either go to Manchester United or Liverpool," He told the BBC .

"I've been a Manchester United supporter since I was young but I said 'listen, it's up to you Neco, which one do you prefer?'

"And he obviously preferred Liverpool, he got on better with the lads there."

His parents will also be making the journey to Qatar to support him, where they will take a flag that reads: “Brazil had Zico, we’ve got Neco”.
