Man Utd owners the Glazers donate $1million to aid relief effort for Hurricane Ian

Manchester United's owners, the Glazer family, have announced they will donate $1million to assist relief efforts following Hurricane Ian in the United States.

The storm has swept through the south east of the country and has caused major damage in the state of Florida. It has been the most affected state and a huge search and rescue effort has taken place in an attempt to save lives amid the devastation.

At least 10 people have died in the state but officials fear the confirmed toll could rise considerably. USA President Joe Biden has warned the category one storm could be the deadliest hurricane in Florida's history, with a "substantial loss of life".

Ian is now moving inland and heading towards North and South Carolina. A blackout is still affecting some 2.2million Florida homes and businesses. The flood waters have been so severe they have trapped some people in their homes, officials said, with the National Guard going door to door in the city of Orlando to rescue those stranded.

As such, United's owners, who also own the NFL team Tampa Bay Buccaneers, have donated $1m to try and help those effected, as per ESPN. The donation will be allocated to organisations providing support to those most impacted by the storm in Southwest Florida and around the state.

Ahead of Ian’s arrival and as the storm pummelled Florida, states of emergency were also declared across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. Tropical storm warnings were issued for coastal areas from Georgia to North Carolina, and the stream is set to continue throughout Friday and into the weekend.

The money put forward from the Glazers is following a huge fallout from some United fans after Rick & Morty banners were spotted draped over Old Trafford. The American owners are hardly in the best books for many United supporters, who have staged protests over the years of their leadership, and fans are fuming after witnessing a major change to their beloved stadium.

A few fans who had walked past the famous ground noticed quite a significant change to the usual overlay. Draped across the front was a huge banner advertising the cartoon show Rick & Morty.

Fans have taken shots at the Glazers for the commercial move, with one saying: "Most embarrassing club in the world. Get them lazy snakes out of the club right now. #GlazersOut."

Another fan wrote: "@Adidas plaster a cartoon like Rick & Morty all over Old Trafford. This is why we boycott you because you fund the glazers greed."

And another angrily posted: "How have @ManUtd let @adidas plaster a cartoon like Rick & Morty all over Old Trafford. Make it make sense."
