Man Utd news: Roy Keane lets rip after Ralf Rangnick outwitted by Pep Guardiola

Manchester United's top four hopes were dealt a blow on Sunday when they were beaten soundly 4-1 by local rivals Man City.

The performance, which at one point saw the sides level at 1-1, saw former captain Roy Keane blast the team for an 'unforgivable' display.

There was also a rant from Keane's old teammate Gary Neville, who echoed the Sky Sports pundit's point about how bad United were at the Etihad Stadium.

Ultimately the game saw United's interim manager Ralf Rangnick be tactically outwitted by City's Pep Guardiola.

Ralf outwitted

Manchester United may have played well in the opening 45 minutes but found themselves 2-1 down at the break.

In the second half, City asserted themselves and outplayed their neighbours with Riyad Mahrez scoring twice to add to Kevin de Bruyne's brace in the first half.

The 4-1 scoreline didn't flatter City, who saw manager Pep Guardiola outclass his opposite manager Ralf Rangnick.

The interim manager entered the game without key players like Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo but his team selection and tactics failed to pick up three points... and in the end, City were toying with his side.

Keane lets rip

Former United captain Roy Keane was furious with how his old side conducted themselves on the pitch. Keane called the display at the Etihad Stadium "unforgivable".

While accepting that you can't win every match you play, Keane was left confused by how easy City highlighted United's "shortcomings".

"There’s ways to lose football matches, we’ve all lost football matches but the way United lost today – they stopped running, they gave up, players not running back, that’s what I don’t understand," Keane said while doing punditry for Sky Sports.

Neville slams 'embarrassing' performance

Like his former teammate, Gary Neville was perplexed by the manner of United's defeat on Sunday afternoon.

United were down one down inside the opening five minutes and though they pulled level through Jadon Sancho, City restored their lead six minutes later.

And the second half saw City dominate from start to finish, with Neville slamming his old side for their 'embarrassing' response to going behind.

“The scoreline isn’t the problem. It’s the response to going 3-1 down that’s the problem. They [Manchester United] have thrown the towel in," said Neville on Sky Sports commentary.
