Man Utd news: Red Devils star blown away by transfer as Frenkie de Jong slams "lies"

Manchester United were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Newcastle on Sunday to bring an end to their three-game winning run in all competitions, although it stretched their unbeaten record to four games.

Despite failing to score, United stood firm to keep successive clean sheets at Old Trafford, which was in large part down to the display of Lisandro Martinez, who has received high praise from one of his team-mates. Elsewhere, Frenkie de Jong has hit out at “lies” about his salary, while Cristiano Ronaldo gave a heartfelt message to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest stories coming out of Old Trafford.

Shaw blown away by Martinez

Man Utd defender Luke Shaw has admitted he is blown away by Martinez following another impressive defensive display in Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Newcastle in the Premier League.

The Argentine had his doubters when he first moved to the top flight in the summer, due to his 5ft 9in frame as a centre back, but has hardly put a foot wrong all season and once again impressed over the weekend. As a result, Shaw gave a glowing review of his team-mate.

"[He has been] unbelievable, to be honest," Shaw told United's website. "You can see everyone loves him. The fans love him. His left foot is unbelievable. I think it always helps when you play with a left-footer on the side because he naturally likes to come out to that side, and I think he has fitted in really well.”

De Jong hits out at “lies”

Barcelona midfielder De Jong has hit out at the “lies” surrounding talks of his salary at the Camp Nou after it was revealed over the summer that he is reportedly the highest earner at the club.

It has been well publicised in recent years that the Catalan outfit have a number of financial issues, while it was widely reported that De Jong was owed up to €17million in back payments through deferrals and amortisations. However, the Dutchman has now responded to claims of his huge wage in Spain.

Speaking to ZiggoSport, he said: "I don't think I am Barca's best paid player after Messi. There has been a campaign with a lot of lies. In each of the first 3 years I played here, I cut my salary. So eventually money has to come back and of course it will look bigger."

Ronaldo’s heartfelt message to Ferguson

Man Utd’s 37-year-old forward has sent a heartfelt message to former boss Ferguson after the Scotsman presented him with an award at Old Trafford on Saturday as recognition for achieving 700 career goals.

Ronaldo becomes the first player in history to complete the feat after coming off the bench to score United’s winner in their 2-1 defeat of Everton on October 9, and his achievement was recognised on Sunday before the clash with Newcastle.

Ferguson, the man who first brought him to Manchester, handed him the award. The Portuguese legend has since posted two pictures of himself and the Scot with the caption "Always good to be with you boss!" on social media.
