Man Utd news: Red Devils respond to Cristiano Ronaldo request as defender move made

Manchester United's players have had their first week of training under the new regime of Erik ten Hag. Fans will be hoping there are some fresh faces to add to the mix next week too, although few would have been braced for Cristiano Ronaldo's shock request to move on.

The Red Devils seem close to improving their defence at least, with Tyrell Malacia set to join from Feyenoord in a £13 million deal. Speculation also continues to simmer regarding Frenkie de Jong, with the Barcelona midfielder said to be Ten Hag's top target.

While those associated with United will know some patience is required to get the team back on track after their worst Premier League points haul in history, there will be an increased urgency to get new faces through the door and acclimatised to the methods of the new man. Especially if last season's top scorer heads for the exit.

Mirror Sport has all of your latest Red Devils news.

United respond to Ronaldo request

Manchester United have declined to respond to speculation regarding Ronaldo, with numerous reports suggesting the veteran striker wants to leave the club.

Ronaldo was expected to remain at Old Trafford to aid Ten Hag usher in a new era, with the team looking to recover from their worst ever Premier League points total. However, the 37-year-old is said to want to play Champions League football in the twilight years of his career.

Simon Mullock has since reported that United have declined to respond to questions about Ronaldo's future.

"United were adamant last week that the Portuguese superstar would not be allowed to leave the club after it emerged Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes had met with new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly about a potential move to Stamford Bridge," it's said. "There have also been suggestions that Jose Mourinho's Roma and Ronaldo's first club Sporting Lisbon are interested in signing the 37-year-old."

Bayern Munich are also said to be considering a move for the forward, with Robert Lewandowski linked with Barcelona.

United make move for Martinez

United have made their most significant move yet in the fight for Lisandro Martinez, having tabled a bid of around £40 million for the Argentina defender.

The Red Devils and Arsenal have both been linked with a move for the Ajax star throughout the summer. The Gunners are reported to have made a £34 million bid that was rejected and now United are ready to blow their Premier League rivals out of the water with £35.3million up front and add-ons worth a further £4.3million.

The 24-year-old has been a crucial cog in Amsterdam in recent years, able to operate as both a centre-back and a central midfielder. The Eredivisie side were said to be hopeful their valuation of the defender would put off potential bidders, while they also want to avoid losing players to former boss Ten Hag.

Martinez has reportedly told Ajax that he wants to leave as he is keen to play Premier League football next season.

De Jong has Chelsea preference

For much of the summer, United looked to have had a clear run at Barcelona playmaker Frenkie de Jong. That might be about to change.

Chelsea are reported to have entered the race for the Dutchman. De Jong is said to be attracted by the potential to play Champions League football next season, something United are unable to offer after their sixth-place finish.

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel is said to be keen on lowering the average age of the squad and in midfield they have two key players over 30 in N'Golo Kante and Jorginho. De Jong can also play as a centre-back in a back three, something that would make him an ideal fit for Chelsea's three-man defence.

United are widely reported to have agreed a £56 million deal with Barcelona for the playmaker, with the Catalan giants happy to sell in order to ease their crippling financial issues.
