Man Utd news: Long-time Lionel Messi regret detailed as Red Devils handed transfer boost

Manchester United extended their unbeaten run to eight matches over the weekend as Erik ten Hag’s players continue to adapt to his new philosophy and show signs of vast improvement.

But the Dutchman is still on the lookout for further upgrades to his side, despite a huge spend of more than £200million during the summer, and has been handed a huge boost with one of his targets ‘unhappy’ with his current situation. Elsewhere, Sir Alex Ferguson’s Lionel Messi regret during his time as Red Devils manager has been revealed.

Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest stories coming out of Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag provided transfer boost

Ten Hag has been handed a fresh transfer opportunity after it has been revealed that one of his targets is currently ‘unhappy’ with his situation this season, putting the Red Devils on high alert.

The Dutchman is keen to continue his rebuild of the club during the January transfer window, should United’s owners grant him with extra funds, and he may now have the chance to sign Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard.

The Red Devils were linked with the French defender during the summer and could look to revisit his situation following reports from Sky Sports in Germany and Sport1, who claim Pavard is not pleased about being left out for Bayern's last two matches and could look for a new club in January.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s Lionel Messi regret explained

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson regretted not marking Messi with Park Ji-Sung during the Champions League final defeats to Barcelona in 2009 and 2011.

Messi popped up with goals in both games as United lost 2-0 and 3-1, respectively, with the Argentine coming into the best form of his career. However, even though Ferdinand revealed Ferguson’s regret, he was unsure as to whether Messi could have been nullified at all.

Ferdinand explained in the BBC Sport documentary ‘Messi’: “Ferguson said that he should have put Park Ji-Sung on him. If anyone could have done it, then it would have been him. But I have watched so many clips of that game when he moves Park around a lot.”

The Red Devils have enjoyed a good run of form of late and Ten Hag is keen to ensure that his side can hit the ground running when they return to Premier League action after the World Cup in late December.

United will play a friendly match against La Liga side Cadiz on December 7 as part of a winter training camp during the World Cup. It will be the first of two matches they play, with a second opposition yet to be named.
