Man Utd news: Inside Edinson Cavani's exit as Erik ten Hag listens to Ralf Rangnick

Edinson Cavani will leave Manchester United this summer after a difficult campaign, scoring just two Premier League goals.

The Uruguayan's exit is proving to be messy - swearing at a supporter after United's defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday - yet new boss Erik ten Hag can't worry about that. He's aiming to build a new squad and it appears he's listening to his predecessor Ralf Rangnick.

The Dutchman is expected to act on Rangnick's player recommendation and another star could also be on his way to Manchester after Frenkie de Jong was handed a transfer ultimatum... and the news doesn't stop there. Here are the biggest Man Utd headlines.

Cavani's fall from grace is difficult to process, as he is set to leave United as a free agent shortly. His contract extension last summer was considered one of the best moves of the window after he scored 10 goals in his last 11 games of the 2020-21 term.

The striker showed no signs of slowing down - despite being in his mid-thirties - as he helped United secured second spot in the Premier League. He was primed to have another big season, yet things haven't gone to plan for a variety of reasons.

Ten Hag is making efforts to secure his first signing as United boss with a renewed move for RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku.

The Red Devils have been interested in the Frenchman for some time and Rangnick is thought to be a big fan of he forward. It's believed he wanted United to move for Nkunku in the January - only to be told the club had not conducted an in-depth analysis.

Reports suggest United have engaged in discussions with the player's representatives regarding a switch and it is even claimed an offer could potentially be lodged with RB Leipzig within the next week - although there's every chance the German side will reject it.

De Jong's ultimatum

United are seeking De Jong's final answer about whether he wants to join the club from Barcelona this summer.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to Manchester since Ten Hag was announced as United's new manager in April. The pair worked together at Ajax and helped the club reach the Champions League semi-finals during the 2018-19 season.

It's believed De Jong, who joined Barcelona in the summer of 2019, prefer to stay and fight for his place in Spain - but the Catalan giants are still in serious financial danger and could be forced to sell some of their best players this summer.

Barcelona must offload players before they can buy anyone due to their restraints - and with Pedri, Gavi and Sergio Busquests all impressing in Barca's midfield last term, De Jong may be the one to make way.
