Man Utd news: Harry Maguire replacement 'identified' as Jadon Sancho's pal 'targeted'

Manchester United have been told to bring Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt in to replace captain Harry Maguire in the Red Devils' starting XI.

Ralf Rangnick's side registered a disappointing 1-1 draw with the Premier League's basement club Burnley on Tuesday night, with United captain Maguire criticised for his performance.

And now ex-United midfielder Kleberson has told the club they need to replace their struggling captain with Juve ace De Ligt.

It comes as the club have reportedly 'targeted' Borussia Dortmund centre-back Manuel Akanji, and could move for the defender in the next transfer window.

And Scott McTominay has echoed the assessment of United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo of the club's season,.

McTominay's assessment

Scott McTominay shares Cristiano Ronaldo's belief that Manchester United must finish in the top three in the Premier League and win trophies to regard the season as a success.

United fell to fifth place in the Premier League on Tuesday night as their 1-1 draw with Burnley allowed David Moyes' West Ham United to leapfrog them in the table.

Maguire replacement 'identified'

One of the players to register a disappointing performance against Sean Dyche's side was United captain Harry Maguire.

United legend Rio Ferdinand was critical of the centre-back's part in Jay Rodriguez's second-half equaliser, and former star Kleberson has had his say as well.

The Brazilian has told his former team they need to replace Maguire in their backline, and recommended Juventus and Holland defender Matthijs de Ligt as the perfect candidate.

Sancho's pal 'targeted'

United could target Jadon Sancho's former Borussia Dortmund teammate and close friend Manuel Akanji, according to reports.

Claims coming out of Germany suggest United are 'very interested' on the Swiss centre-back to solve their defensive crisis.

Akanji has previously admitted that the Old Trafford outfit are his 'dream club' – and his closeness to Jadon Sancho could prove to be key for United as they try to wrap up the signing.
