Man Utd news: Frenkie de Jong heads to England as Erik ten Hag transfer wishlist emerges

Manchester United are looking in far better shape than they were after two games of the season, but the coming days could be vital in determining how they fare for the remainder of the season.

A narrow victory over Southampton on Saturday was just what Erik ten Hag's team needed after kick-starting their season with a victory over Liverpool. The good news kept coming on Sunday night, with a fee agreed with Ajax for Antony, and there could be more deals on the way.

With United's players preparing for a trip to Leicester City while the higher-ups complete any outstanding transfer business, it looks like being a big few days. Here are the latest news lines coming out of Old Trafford.

De Jong on the move

Frenkie de Jong sparked plenty of speculation by making a trip to the UK just days before the transfer window shuts. However, there have been suggestions the timing of his trip is just coincidental.

Barcelona handed their players some time off after a victory over Valladolid at the weekend. De Jong got a 30-minute run-out in the 4-0 win, which prolonged the Catalan club's unbeaten start to the season under Xavi.

Man Utd agreed a fee for De Jong earlier in the transfer window but were unable to agree terms, while Chelsea have also shown an interest in the former Ajax man. For now, it still seems as though he will still be a Barcelona player as we enter September, but potential suitors haven't given up hope amid a continued dispute with the club regarding deferred wages.

United made Gordon enquiry

Manchester United looked into a late move for Everton starlet Anthony Gordon, according to new reports. The winger scored the only goal of the game when Frank Lampard's side beat United back in April, and got his first goal of the current season against Brentford on Saturday.

According to The Athletic, United enquired about the ability of the youngster, who has also been on Chelsea's radar. The England under-21 star was subject of a bid from the Blues earlier in the window, with Everton saying no.

Chelsea had been expected to return with an improved bid in the region of £50m plus add-ons. However, with Wilfried Zaha also emerging as a target for the London side, it's possible that Gordon stays at Everton.

Ten Hag's wishlist

Erik ten Hag could still make further additions to his squad after completing a move for Antony. The £84m Brazilian is set to bring Man Utd's summer spending to around £200m in total after earlier fees were forked out for Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro.

United's manager looks set to get the backup goalkeeper he has been craving for much of the summer. Newcastle's Martin Dubravka is the front-runner, with a loan move for the Slovakian looking most likely at the time of writing.

It won't even end there, though. Indeed, United could make as many as four new additions to their squad in the coming days with players targeted in a number of different positions.
