Man Utd news: Erik ten Hag set to lose another star amid deepening injury crisis

Manchester United can take a step closer to winning a cup treble when they take on Europa League rivals Sevilla on Thursday.

The quarter-final tie is evenly poised following a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford last time out, with Erik ten Hag's side conceding two late own goals to surrender a comfortable lead. Yet Man Utd are still classed as favourites after knocking out LaLiga leaders Barcelona.

Man Utd also have a chance of winning the FA Cup after reaching the semi-finals. They take on Brighton on Sunday, with Manchester City and Sheffield United competing in the other tie. With that in mind, here are the latest headlines from Old Trafford.

Ten Hag to lose another star

Alejandro Garnacho has been named in Argentina's preliminary squad for the upcoming U20 World Cup on home soil, despite the tournament starting next month.

Garnacho, 18, has enjoyed a breakthrough season under Ten Hag after scoring four goals and providing five assists in 29 first-team outings. The exciting winger picked an ankle injury last month but is close to a return to fitness ahead of Man Utd's run in.

Although Garnacho's return is a boost for Ten Hag, losing him again would be a blow. Man Utd will play at least two Premier League fixtures after the U20 World Cup gets underway in Argentina on May 20, with a fixture against Chelsea still be rearranged.

Crucially, though, the Europa League final at the Puskas Arena is pencilled in for May 31, with the FA Cup final taking place at Wembley four days later.

Man Utd's injury list is already packed. Lisandro Martinez (foot) and Donny van de Beek (knee) are out for the season, while the likes of Marcus Rashford (groin), Luke Shaw (hamstring), Raphael Varane (foot), Scott McTominay (knock), Tyrell Malacia (knee), Marcel Sabitzer (knock) and Phil Jones (knee) are all nursing existing complaints.

Ex-employee lifts lid

A former Man Utd employee has claimed that Jose Mourinho's time in charge of the club was often a "nightmare". Rod Thornley, a physio, worked at Old Trafford for 19 years and has spoken about his long spell during an appearance on the Undr The Cost podcast.

"The best way I can explain Jose is on his good days, he was amazing to work for and he made me feel brilliant," Thornley confessed. "It made me feel better than Sir Alex [Ferguson] ever did. He made me a part of his little close circle and I loved it."

Yet Thornley added: "On his bad days, God he was a nightmare. He knew I'll talk to a player and knew well to p*** a player off and stuff."

Ferdinand's bold claim

Rio Ferdinand believes Man Utd will have enjoyed a better season than Arsenal if the former finish in the Premier League's top four and the latter miss out on the title.

Arsenal are four points clear of Manchester City in the title race having played a game more, but the gap is getting shorter with each passing game. Pep Guardiola's champions will be confident of catching Mikel Arteta's side during the coming weeks.

Man Utd are on course to finish third and have already won the Carabao Cup, with the possibility of more trophies. As such, Red Devils legend Ferdinand believes his former employers will have achieved more than Arsenal if the Gunners fail to get over the line.

Speaking on his Vibe with Five podcast, Ferdinand said: "If Arsenal don't win the league and Man Utd finish third and just the one trophy, they have had a better season.

"If you're a player, forget fans, and you finish third and win a trophy, Carabao Cup whatever it is and the team above you finish second and win no trophies, who is the happier player?"
