Man Utd news: Erik ten Hag receives Casemiro boost after Nottingham Forest injury blow

Manchester United will be looking to bounce back from their European disappointment when they take on Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Sunday afternoon.

Erik ten Hag's side threw away a two-goal lead against Sevilla at Old Trafford on Thursday night, with Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire scoring late own goals. United must now win the second leg in Spain in five days' time to reach the Europa League semi-finals.

In terms of their Premier League campaign, United find themselves in a precarious position. They are fourth in the table, three points ahead of Tottenham in fifth with a game in hand. Here are the main headlines from Old Trafford ahead of Sunday afternoon's game.

Martial set for rest

Ten Hag believes it would be "a risk" for Anthony Martial to start against Forest, with Wout Weghorst expected to be recalled.

The United boss told reporters: "Maybe he can, but it's a risk and we can't take that risk in this moment because we don't have so many options in the frontline with [Marcus] Rashford and [Alejandro] Garnacho injured, so we have to be careful.

"Also, in the individual prospect, we know when there's a lot of load he gets injured and we have to build it, especially when the games come quick."

United are expected to be without Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez for the Forest game after they limped out of Thursday night's match. Yet Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay, who missed the 2-2 draw, should be available. Ten Hag added, "We have two sessions to go, so I don't know now. But it can be Scott and Luke will return to the squad."

Casemiro's long-term future

Casemiro plans to finish his playing career at Old Trafford after a stellar first season. The 31-year-old midfielder joined United in a £70million deal in August and has made an immediate impression in Manchester, helping Ten Hag's side with the Carabao Cup.

The Brazil international's plans have emerged after his former Real Madrid team-mate Danilo called for him to join Juventus.

"The perception of Brazilian footballers has changed and so where there was once a clash with Juve, all of these players could come here and be in the team for years," Danilo said, as per The Express. "I’d love to have Casemiro. He’d be at home here."

Scholes raises concern

Scholes is worried about Ten Hag playing Maguire and Victor Lindelof at the back due to their lack of minutes this term.

The United legend told BT Sport after Thursday night's game: "Lindelof and Maguire, that worries me slightly just because they haven’t played games. I think they’ll get through it, I think they’ll be fine, centre half is a position where you can tend to get through it."

Scholes is less concerned about United's attack after Bruno Fernandes received a one-match European ban. He added: "I think forward-wise we’ll be okay.

"Fernandes will be a miss but you have to remember Eriksen is on his way back so that is him definitely starting, that is a crucial bit of creativity in there."
