Man Utd news: Erik ten Hag provides contract talks update as legends recall heated bust-up

Manchester United are stepping up talks over a host of new contracts as one eye turns towards next season.

The Red Devils are back on track under Erik ten Hag but have big plans for the summer. They are expected to make a move for Harry Kane to bolster their attack. It could give the Red Devils a frightening line-up as they aim to bid for Premier League success.

There's also a matter of keeping existing players at the club, with Marcus Rashford and David de Gea still in talks over new contracts and Luke Shaw expected to put pen to paper on an extension. Here's a run-down of all the latest news out of Old Trafford ahead of a big game against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Ten Hag update on contract talks

Erik ten Hag insists talks over a new deal for Marcus Rashford are "an internal process" with the Manchester United manager focused on on-field matters.

The Dutchman also confirmed he wants to keep David de Gea at the club as he provided an update on talks with both players ahead of United's clash with Newcastle on Sunday.

"It's an internal process," Ten Hag said. "We focus on winning games, also planning for the future so in the back we're working on that.

"It's about agents, it's about football director John Murtough, Rashy and I are focusing on performing."

Shaw agrees deal

Although the futures of Rashford and De Gea are not resolved, Luke Shaw has agreed a new four-year contract at Manchester United.

The 27-year-old's current deal is set to expire in 2024 but the Red Devils are keen to tie him down. Shaw has been exceptional under Erik ten Hag this term, having regained his place from Tyrell Malacia.

According to the Athletic, Shaw is expected to pen a new deal which will take him past a decade at Old Trafford following his switch from Southampton in 2014. Shaw's contract will mark the first piece of business done while the uncertainty is hanging over the club amid potential new owners.

United triggered an initial one-year extension in Shaw's contract in December to take him up until the end of next season, and now he has committed his long-term future to the club. Shaw has made 35 appearances in all competitions this term, scoring once and grabbing six assists.

Neville and Van Nistelrooy recall bust-up

Gary Neville and Ruud van Nistelrooy clashed in an incident during their Man Utd stint together which almost led to punches being thrown, the pair have admitted.

Dutch striker Van Nistelrooy spent five seasons with United, scoring 150 goals in 215 appearances. There were highs - not least the 2002-03 Premier League title win - but there were also more difficult moments.

One of those came after a match against Middlesbrough, where he and team-mate Neville appeared ready to come to blows. However, with a number of years having passed, both have been able to reflect calmly on the heated incident.

The pair recalled the incident on The Overlap, Van Nistelrooy admitted - to Neville's surprise - that he considered himself to blame. "You gave me a right b*****ing and rightly so," the former Dutch international said after Neville made reference to him being "the only player that’s come to punch me at the end of the game".
