Man Utd news: Erik ten Hag prepares six-player fire sale as Raphael Varane slammed

The January transfer window may have only just ended, but Manchester United are already turning their focus to the summer.

Boss Erik ten Hag is set to continue his overhaul of the Red Devils squad by embarking on a firesale of top stars. The Dutchman is keen to bring in a group of new faces at the end of the season and will look to fund that by making several big-money sales.

The news comes as it was also reported the Glazers are set to leave behind £500million in debt if they sell the club and star defender Raphael Varane came under fire for his decision to retire from international football. Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest United news.

Ten Hag prepares for fire sale

As part of his continuing overhaul of the Manchester United squad, boss Erik ten Hag is preparing to launch a firesale in the summer. Harry Maguire, Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial will all be put on the transfer list.

Ten Hag is hoping to sell at least six players and fund a summer splurge in the process as he looks to upgrade his options. Alex Telles, Eric Bailly and Donny van de Beek are all also set to join that trio in heading for the exit door.

The United boss hopes to raise significant funds by moving on those six permanently. He is set to then use that money to bring in a striker, centre-back and midfielder to further stamp his own plans on the club.

Glazers set to leave behind debt

The Glazer family may be preparing to finally grant many United fans' wishes and sell the club, but the Americans are planning to leave behind a nasty surprise. It has been reported that the Glazers will leave the next owners to deal with the club's £500m debts.

The Glazers recently put the Red Devils up for sale, slapping a £6billion price tag on the Premier League giants. And their deal to sell United will also come with the understanding that they can walk away from the financial mess they have created at Old Trafford.

The most recent accounts show that United have debts of just under £515m, meaning just £35m has been wiped off the £550m leveraged debt the Glazers placed on the club when they bought it in 2005.

Varane blasted over retirement

United star Raphael Varane has been slammed for his decision to retire from international duty. Former France winger Jerome Rothen has labelled the move a "disaster" as he insisted Varane had a duty to play for Les Bleus.

"I think that at this age and when you play in a club that allows you to be at a very high level, you have a duty. It is to bring your talent to your country. It is a disaster," Rothen told AS.

“You have a long history, congratulations! He won the most beautiful of competitions, the World Cup in 2018. We saw all his contribution to the last World Cup. There was skepticism because he was coming off an injury, but he performed very well."
