Man Utd news: David de Gea warning as new transfer theory emerges after Fulham game

After making sure of third spot in the Premier League, Manchester United's attentions will turn to the FA Cup final.

Victory over Fulham on the final day of the season was enough to guarantee Erik ten Hag's side finished above Newcastle. Thursday night's win against Chelsea had already assured them Champions League football, but the final day win brought United their best Premier League points total in five years.

The transfer window is also drawing ever closer, with Erik ten Hag sure to have business to do. Here are the latest lines from around Old Trafford ahead of a busy few weeks.

De Gea fires warning

David de Gea insists Manchester United are determined to beat Manchester City at Wembley and stand in the way of their treble. United have already beaten City in the league this season, but Pep Guardiola has already won the Premier League title and could emulate United's 1998-99 success.

"We know it’s a big final, a special game,” the golden glove winner said. “The whole year we’ve been fighting to be in the position to win titles and we will try absolutely everything to try to win.

"The improvement is there. Of course, we still have far to go, but it's a massive improvement from last season.

"Winning a cup, finishing third, it’s never easy to finish in Champions League places in England. Then we have another final, a big final, so I think at the moment it's a great year.”

Fred theory emerges

Speculation has mounted over Fred leaving this summer after he was spotted in conversation with Marco Silva on Sunday. The Brazilian midfielder was seen speaking to Fulham boss Silva outside Old Trafford after United came from behind to win 2-1.

Fred has struggled for minutes this term under Erik ten Hag, predominantly featuring as a substitute. He was involved in the last 13 Premier League games of the season, but started just two of them.

Fred wouldn't be the first Man Utd fringe player to link up with Silva in West London. Andreas Pereira made the same switch last summer, and has played a significant role for the newly promoted side as they secured a top-half finish.

Ten Hag puts Glazers on alert

Erik ten Hag has made clear he believes the owners need to invest if United are to kick on next season. That applies regardless of whether the Glazer family remain in charge or whether a takeover goes through.

The Glazers began to entertain the idea of a sale back in November, with Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe heading up bids. However, despite hope that a decision would be reached before the end of the season, the process has dragged on.

“The club knows if you want to play top four and compete for trophies in this league, then you have to invest,” Ten Hag told reporters after the Fulham game. “Otherwise you don’t have a chance, because other clubs will.

"We’ve seen it in the winter - all the clubs around us made huge investments. We didn't, but still we made it, so I’m proud of my team.”
