Man Utd news: Cristiano Ronaldo's unhappiness laid bare and Red Devils' new transfer trick

Details of the extent of Cristiano Ronaldo's unhappiness at Manchester United have emerged after the forward asked to leave the Old Trafford club this summer.

The Portuguese superstar wants to leave his current club in order to secure himself Champions League football next season. But that doesn't appear to be the only reason Ronaldo wants out as fresh details over his dejection have emerged.

It comes as Robbie Fowler has pointed out the serious faults in United's transfer policy. And United could take advantage of Arsenal's interest in Lisandro Martinez and Youri Tielemans to help them land both players at bargain prices.

Here are Mirror Football's latest Manchester United headlines.

Have Your Say! Will Cristiano Ronaldo still be a Manchester United player come the end of the summer transfer window? Let us know here.

Ronaldo's unhappiness

A lack of Champions League football is reportedly not the only thing that's upset Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 37-year-old has asked Manchester United to be allowed to leave the club this summer should a team playing in the Champions League come in with an offer for him. Ronaldo is said to have become disillusioned with the lack of progress United are making in the transfer market while Premier League rivals are strengthening, while United's lack of Champions League football has also caused him another problem.

The Red Devils' failure to finish in the top four means that United's squad have had to take a pay cut – something which has reportedly left Ronaldo "upset".

Transfer policy exposed

Former Liverpool star Robbie Fowler thinks Manchester United's failed transfer policy has been cruelly exposed this summer.

Fowler's former side Liverpool have parted ways with Sadio Mane after refusing to meet his wage demands over a new contract, but have managed to agree a new deal with star man Mohamed Salah that will keep him at the club. And Fowler thinks that United's wage bill "is a bit of a mess right now" because they didn't stick to a strict structure when offering contracts to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea.

And according to the former Liverpool star, it could ultimately lead to financial problems "like Barcelona " further down the line.

United's new transfer trick

Manchester United are hoping to beat Premier League rivals Arsenal to the signings of two key targets in the transfer market.

Neither of the two sides will be playing Champions League football next season and both have plenty of work to do to close the gap on the Premier League's top four. That has led to the two clubs targeting busy transfer windows and both are interested in signing Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez and Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans.

It appears United are employing the rather sneaky tactic of waiting for rivals to agree on fees with their targets before swooping in so that they don't get outpriced in this summer's transfer market. It certainly helped them sign Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord after the Dutch club agreed a £13million fee with Lyon – and they could be set to use the technique in their pursuits of Martinez and Tielemans as well.
