Man Utd news: Cristiano Ronaldo reacts to embarrassing loss as message sent to fans

In a season of desperate lows, Manchester United surely reached a nadir on Saturday.

In their penultimate game of the Premier League campaign, they sunk to an embarrassing 4-0 loss at Brighton & Hove Albion, bringing an end to any tiny hopes they had of finishing in the Premier League's top four.

For manager Ralf Rangnick it was a day to forget, especially as the travelling fans turned on their own players in the second half. If boss-in-waiting Erik ten Hag was looking on, he would have been terrified by what he saw.

Mirror Sport has all of the fallout following the stunning result on the south coast, as United's awful 2021-22 season lurched a little closer to the finish line.

Is the 4-0 loss to Brighton the lowest point of the season for United? Let us know in the comments section below!

Ronaldo reaction captured

United found themselves 1-0 down at Brighton at half time on Saturday and while they didn't play well, there were no signs of the spectacular collapse that was to follow in the second half.

Brighton netted three times in 11 minutes and as the goals rained in David De Gea's net, the camera cut to Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese had a smile on his clearly anguished face - potentially a case of laughing to prevent crying.

Ronaldo has been one of the bright points for the Red Devils this season, as he's found the net on a consistent basis. However, at 37 years old it remains to be seen just how much of a role he has to play in Ten Hag's plans in the long-term.

Fernandes fronts up

After the team received plenty of flak from the travelling United fans at full time, it was Bruno Fernandes who fronted up to the cameras after the game.

The Portugal international has endured a challenging season for United, not reaching the same immaculate levels he set in his first couple of terms at Old Trafford. And Fernandes offered a candid assessment of both the individual and team display.

"The result is what it is," he said. "It is not good enough. They outplayed us. They always had a solution. Pressed us better and they deserved the result."

"I include myself in that," he said about chants from supporters that the team were not worthy of the United shirt. "What we did today, what I did today, was not enough to be in a Man Utd shirt and I accept it."

Souness slams United players

Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool player Graeme Souness said only two United players can be happy with their performances over the course of the Premier League season.

The Scot offered a scathing view of the Red Devils' underperforming squad in the aftermath of the loss to Brighton and took aim at the players who have let both Rangnick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer down.

Souness said that only Ronaldo and De Gea can be content with their efforts.

"You'll like to think the players are playing for their futures at that club because there must be question marks over so many of them," he said on Sky Sports. "So many have underperformed, we know they're better. But it's okay us saying that, but they have to go out and do it.

"Near enough to a man, Ronaldo's chipped in with goals and the goalkeeper [De Gea], maybe. Other than that, you're struggling to find anyone that you would say are anything like a Man United player."
