Man Utd news: Cristiano Ronaldo influence noted as honest Ralf Rangnick point made

What next for Manchester United?

Going into the winter break the team appeared to be building momentum under Ralf Rangnick, triggering belief that the second half of the campaign would be an exciting one.

But on the other side of the mid-season hiatus, the team suffered a shock loss to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup and then stuttered to a draw in the Premier League against bottom club Burnley.

On Saturday, they will be looking to put things right in the early kick off against a Southampton side that have found some form of their own as of late.

Here are your latest United headlines ahead of a crucial weekend.

Ronaldo influence on new boss

According to reports, Manchester United are yet to make a decision over the potential successor to Rangnick, although it would appear Cristiano Ronaldo may play a part in the decision-making.

It's suggested that Ronaldo would not want to see Rangnick get the role on a permanent basis and that he is currently considering ending his second spell at Old Trafford after just one season.

After a brilliant beginning to the campaign, the 37-year-old's form has sagged in recent weeks, with no goals in his last five outings.

Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag are rumoured to be the two main candidates to take over on a full-time basis in the summer, while the inconsistent performances under Rangnick have likely ended his hopes of getting the job.

Shaw offers Rangnick assessment

Luke Shaw has played down recent speculation that there is unhappiness behind the scenes at United.

According to recent reports, some players have not been content with some of Rangnick's methods, contributing to a fractured atmosphere at the club's Carrington training complex.

Despite these stories and the poor performances on the pitch, Shaw said the mood is positive at the club and that he is impressed with the work being done by the manager.

"I am really impressed with how he has come in, what he has changed, the details he brings and what he wants the lads to do is really good," said the left-back. "Of course, as I said, the team are all together and the team is fully with the manager and his staff.

"Everything that has been written in the media isn't true because I see a completely different side of the team and with the manager inside here than what I read on the outside."
