Man Utd news: Carlo Ancelotti gives move his blessing as Liverpool show quality

Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani may be set to sign for Real Madrid at the end of the season.

The Uruguayan's contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season and Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly keen to bring him to Spain. The forward would be expected to be a back-up for Karim Benzema after Los Blancos failed in their efforts to sign Erling Haaland.

It comes as Liverpool hammered United 4-0 at Anfield on Tuesday night thanks to goals from Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. And Reds fans paid a touching tribute to United forward Cristiano Ronaldo's son who tragically died during childbirth this week.

Here are Mirror Football's latest Manchester United headlines.

Liverpool fans set old rivalries aside for a brief moment to pay a touching tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo's son when the two teams met at Anfield on Tuesday night.

The United forward, who had been expecting twins with partner Georgina Rodriguez, confirmed on Monday that his son had tragically died during childbirth but that thankfully their daughter had been delivered safely. And ahead of United's Premier League encounter against Liverpool on Tuesday, Reds fans organised a clap during the seventh minute to honour Ronaldo's son.

But in an incredibly touching moment they went one step further as well – breaking out into a spontaneous chorus of the club's iconic song 'You'll Never Walk Alone'.

Anfield talking points

It was a match full of talking points, from the sense of deja vu to Paul Pogba's possible United farewell.

Ancelotti plots swoop

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has reportedly given his blessing for the club to sign Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayan is set to leave the Old Trafford club when his contract expires at the end of the season and could be offered the chance to secure a big move to the Bernabeu. Reports coming out of Spain suggest he he would accept a role as Karim Benzema's back-up and could be targeted if Los Blancos fail to sign Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland – who looks likely to join Manchester City.

But plenty of other clubs are said to be interested in the striker – including Madrid's bitter rivals Barcelona.
