Man Utd found two new gamechangers to inspire first trophy success in six years

There was only one survivor of the last Manchester United side that won a trophy starting for them again at Wembley on Sunday.

And it was the one that United fans had been desperate to see.

The slight injury doubt that hovered over Marcus Rashford before the Carabao Cup final might have been overplayed by some, but there was genuine concern over what the potential absence of the English game's most in-form forward might mean for his side.

But there was no need to worry.

Back in Stockholm in 2017 Rashford was the 19-year-old star in waiting, the young kid who would go on to have his run-ins with Jose Mourinho but, for now, was trusted to start the Europa League final against Ajax.

Around him was a team of talented players, but hardly one that will go down in United folklore.

Sergio Romero got the nod in goal having played throughout that Europa League run, with the Argentinean behind a back four of Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling, Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian.

Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and Paul Pogba played in midfield, with the Frenchman linking up with Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Rashford in attack.

A good side, and a winning one as United ultimately ran out 2-0 victors, but ultimately one that didn't mesh with the demands of the manager. Egos clashed and results suffered.

Six years on Rashford is playing in a United side that is also full of stars, but crucially they are aligned with the character of the manager, the man who has led his side to that first trophy in six years and instilled the belief that there is more to come.

That Erik ten Hag only arrived at Old Trafford in the summer makes that all the more impressive of course, and it is two players who came in with him who set the standards and showed the examples for their teammates to follow.

In Casemiro United added a proven winner, and a player who has seen it all before on this and every other stage.

The midfielder has added a level of sheen and class to a department of the pitch which used to malfunction so readily for previous United bosses, and although the Brazilian isn't the long-term answer to the position he is the best answer for right now. Others could take note.

It was Casemiro who headed the opening goal at Wembley to flatten a buoyant Newcastle at a time when they were very much in the game, and then when they tried to climb back into it after Rashford had forced the second, the determined but diminutive Lisandro Martinez stood in their way.

The centre-back has been another brilliant addition for United, and one that was familiar to Ten Hag given their past together at Ajax.

He knew exactly what he was getting with Martinez, and his battling qualities - seen as he dived in front of almost every Newcastle attack - have rubbed off on the rest of his teammates.

Casemiro and Martinez embody everything that wasn't at United before, but is there in spades under Ten Hag.
