Man Utd face £20million problem after transfer target's World Cup showing

Manchester United transfer target Cody Gakpo has added another £20million to his price tag with his World Cup displays, according to Wes Brown.

The former Old Trafford star believes the Red Devils need to try and add a new face to their forward line after Cristiano Ronaldo's sudden exit. The Portuguese star was by no means a regular, but his departure leaves Erik ten Hag light with the club still competing on several fronts.

Gakpo was linked with United in the summer but remained at PSV Eindhoven. He has continued to find the goal with regularity in the Netherlands and has carried that form over to Qatar, scoring three times for the Dutch as they topped their group. Brown believes he'd be an ideal fit - but expects his value has skyrocketed.

He told Mirror Football of Gakpo, via Bet365 : "He's decent, I've watched him live when I've been to Holland. He's young, he's confident, he's powerful, a big lad. I just feel like he'd fit in, but already you can probably put another £20m on top because everyone will be after him. Like I said, people don't let the best strikers go in January unless you want to overpay, but I'm guessing in the summer, he'll be on everyone's target list."

Ten Hag had hoped Anthony Martial would lead the line this term after an impressive pre-season, but injuries have hampered those ambitions. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho benefit from playing in wider areas, leaving a spot through the middle.

Gakpo himself recently told De Telegraaf : “As it stands now, I will still be playing for PSV after the winter break. But as I said before the start of the World Cup: we will see what will happen.”

United are also considering recalling several loan stars in January - one of whom is Amad. The Ivorian is playing his football in the second tier with Sunderland but could provide another option for Ten Hag. Brown is confident the youngster would get games, but is unsure whether he would be suited to playing through the middle.

He said: "I actually saw Amad last week - Sunderland were in Dubai and I was there. But he's been doing really well, I know the fans love him. He's a very quick player, gets into certain areas and he can score. Whether you could start him for Man Utd as a No.9, I'm not quite sure yet, he's still young. He is the type of player who, if he came back, would get game time."
