Man Utd eye two Aaron Wan-Bissaka replacements as transfer search goes full circle

Manchester United have reportedly added Thomas Meunier and Sergino Dest to their list of targets as they search for a replacement for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The Englishman was signed from Crystal Palace for £50million three years ago, but his United career has nosedived. He lost his place in the starting line-up to Diogo Dalot last season, with Erik ten Hag keeping the Portuguese international as his first-choice.

United are now looking to sell or loan Wan-Bissaka, with Crystal Palace the current frontrunners. If they can move him out of Old Trafford, it would allow Ten Hag to bring in his own player to take over as the starting right-back in his squad.

According to The Telegraph, two of the leading targets who United will move for are Meunier and Dest. Meunier is currently playing for Borussia Dortmund, having joined the Bundesliga side from Paris Saint-Germain two years ago.

While the 30-year-old is highly experienced, he has a contract with Dortmund for another two years. That means that it is unknown if they will actually be tempted into selling him, especially as they have started the season with two wins from two games.

The Red Devils are now lining up a £12.6million move for the Belgian international. He has also been linked with a move to Barcelona, who are also in the market for a new right-back this summer.

While Meunier is the 'more likely' target, Dest is also seen as an option, with Barcelona having told the American he is free to leave. He was left out of the squad that drew with Rayo Vallecano last weekend, with Ronald Araújo instead starting at right-back.

United's interest in Meunier is ironic considering they originally considered the Belgian back when they opted to sign Wan-Bissaka. That decision has turned out to be a disaster, with Ten Hag having told club chiefs he wants rid of the former Crystal Palace star.

Palace looks to be his most likely destination, though they are only willing to pay £10m for him or take him on loan. Such a small fee would be an embarrassing turn of events for the Red Devils following their big-money spend on him just three years ago.

Wan-Bissaka has frequently come in for severe criticism for his lack of attacking ability. Former Premier League star Michael Gray slammed the right-back last season following a disappointing performance against Aston Villa.

“Wan-Bissaka, he’s the best defender in the Premier League in a one vs one situation, but his distribution with the ball, with the ball at his feet he wouldn’t get a game in League Two. When I watch him play, he never looks comfortable with the ball at his feet," he told talkSPORT.

There had been high hopes for Wan-Bissaka when he first arrived at Old Trafford following some impressive performances for Palace. But now his career at the Red Devils would appear to be over.
