Manchester United's hopes of European glory went up in smoke on an embarrassing night in Spain.
Erik ten Hag's men were absolutely dreadful as they were comfortably beaten by Sevilla, the serial Europa League winners claiming a 3-0 win at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and a 5-2 aggregate triumph. David de Gea and club captain Harry Maguire both endured horror nights as the Red Devils were unceremoniously dumped out of this quarter-final.
“It’s just been such a bad evening for Manchester United,” lamented Robbie Savage on commentary for BT Sport during the second half. “Shambles is the word.”
He wasn’t wrong.
United’s night got off to the worst possible start when De Gea passed out to Maguire and Sevilla swarmed the shaky centre-back, whose attempted pass out of danger was cut out by Erik Lamela. Youssef En-Nesyri picked up the loose ball and coolly slotted home a seventh minute opener.
Sevilla were celebrating another goal as half-time approached, but Lucas Ocampos’ goal was ruled out after VAR review as Marcos Acuna had strayed offside in the build-up.
United brought on Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw at half-time but within 90 seconds of the restart they were 2-0 down. Ivan Rakitic swung in a corner from the right and Loic Bade headed in off the underside of the bar.
United’s humiliation continued when De Gea slipped trying to deal with a high ball and En-Nesyri fired into the empty goal from distance in the 81st minute.
