Man Utd defender Marcos Rojo trains with former club Estudiantes with future uncertain at Old Trafford

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo is training with former club Estudiantes as he looks set to leave the club in the summer.

The 29-year-old hasn't featured for United since the 2-1 Champions League defeat by Valencia in December and has made just three appearances all season.

With Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's preferred centre-back pairing, it appears increasingly likely Rojo will be allowed to depart.

The United centre-back celebrated his birthday in his native Argentina and was granted special permission by his club to train with Superliga outfit Estudiantes, who he began his career with in 2008.

The South American club confirmed the news, posting a picture of Rojo training with the squad on their official Twitter account.

They wrote: "Nothing beats spending your birthday at home! Marcos Rojo was present at City Bell to train and stay in shape with special permission from @ManUtd."

Rojo is expected to return to Manchester later this week, according to reports, but he may have already played his final game in a Manchester United shirt.

The defender, who was recruited by Louis van Gaal back in 2014 from Portuguese outfit Sporting CP, has two years remaining on his current deal.

However, it has been suggested he could be offloaded as United prepare for an upheaval of their squad in the summer transfer window.
