Man Utd 'confident' of Harry Kane transfer this summer - but need help from Liverpool

Manchester United are confident they can land Harry Kane this summer as they eye a marquee striker.

The Tottenham star, who has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford earlier in his career, recently became the club's record goalscorer, which was a long-term ambition. However his north London outfit are still not competitive when it comes to challenging for the Premier League.

United's representatives have contacted Kane's camp via a third party and are buoyed by the response, according to The Sun. Should Tottenham fail to finish in the top four they believe it would force Tottenham into lowering their asking price, which currently stands at £100m.

As a result the Red Devils may require a favour from arch rivals Liverpool, whom they lost to 7-0 on Sunday. The Reds have found some form and are mounting a charge for fourth place. They remain among the most likely sides to pip Tottenham with Newcastle also in the hunt.

Erik ten Hag added reinforcements in several positions when he arrived, signing the likes of Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez. A No 9 was not added however and, with Anthony Martial injured for much of the campaign, the expectation is United will go after a striker once the season ends.

Kane made moves to leave Tottenham just over 18 months ago when Manchester City expressed an interest. Daniel Levy held firm on his stance that the player wasn't for sale and City have since gone on to sign Erling Haaland. Bayern Munich have been credited with interest and could yet rival United.

The England captain admitted recently that there hadn't been a huge amount of dialogue regarding his future. “There's not been much talk if I'm totally honest," he said. "I'm sure they'll be conversations over the coming months but to be honest I'm just focussed on this season and doing my best for the team.

“There's still a lot to play for, trying to get in the Champions League, we have the FA Cup and the Champions League still to try to win. My focus is on that. I know there's going to be rumours, a lot of talk and speculation about my future but I'm just focussed on what I can do.”

Tottenham's last trophy remains their 2008 League Cup triumph, which has led to fierce criticism of club chief Levy. Kane has reached the Champions League final with Tottenham as well as the Carabao Cup final and finished second in the league - but is trophy cabinet remains bare.
