Man Utd chase loan replacement for Christian Eriksen but transfer faces race against time

Manchester United are eyeing up a possible loan move for Bayern Munich midfielder Marcel Sabitzer after Christian Eriksen was ruled out until at least late April with a serious ankle injury.

The Red Devils confirmed that the 30-year-old will miss an "extended period" of time, having been on the end of a poor challenge from Andy Carroll in United's 3-1 win over Reading in the FA Cup. Eriksen has played in all but one of United's Premier League matches this season, featuring 31 times across all competitions.

According to reports on deadline day, United want a midfielder on loan and are plotting a late swoop for Sabitzer, with Chelsea also keen on the Austria international. The 28-year-old has made 24 appearances in all competitions for Bayern this season but could be available to leave the club with Joshua Kimmich back to full fitness.

There is a race against time to conclude a deal, however, with Germany's transfer window closing at 6pm UK time. United have also been offered Atletico Madrid star Yannick Carrasco, but it is understood Erik ten Hag is not keen on signing the Belgian.

While Eriksen's injury is major blow for Ten Hag, the Dutchman is remaining positive and feels like Brazil international Fred can be an excellent alternative if United don't get another deal over the line. The former Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder came on as a substitute on Saturday and scored United's third goal as they breezed into the fifth round.

Speaking after Eriksen sustained his injury, Ten Hag said of Fred: "I think you mentioned already in your first season, he's playing together with Casemiro in the Brazil squad, there's not a worst squad in the world. They have so many choices they can make, but they play together and that tells something about the quality Fred has and what he can contribute to the team.

"You see against Tottenham and Man City, when he's coming on last game he scores a goal, he has a lot of qualities, and they're a good combination, Casemiro and Fred."

The Red Devils announced the news on Tuesday morning that Eriksen will be ruled out for a number of months. A statement from United read: "Christian Eriksen is expected to be out of action for an extended period because of an ankle injury sustained in our FA Cup victory over Reading on Saturday. Our Danish midfielder was withdrawn in the second half of the 3-1 win after being caught by a tackle from Reading striker Andy Carroll.

"While investigations are continuing, initial assessments indicate that Eriksen is likely to be out until late April or early May. Eriksen’s absence will be a big disappointment to manager Erik ten Hag and fans given the consistency of his performances throughout the season so far.

"However, there is hope that Christian can return in time to play a role in the final stages of the season. We all wish Christian the best of luck for a speedy recovery!"
