Man Utd appear to move the goalposts as Ralf Rangnick is 'stripped of responsibility'

Ralf Rangnick has reportedly been stripped of responsibility in the process of Manchester United appointing a new boss.

The interim manager is in charge of the Red Devils for the remainder of the season before he takes a two-year consultancy role in the summer. It's been reported that Rangnick has been involved in the search for his successor, but this may no longer be the case.

Rangnick has already advised the board that the new man needs significant backing in the transfer market while giving his seal of approval for Erik ten Hag, who is a leading contender for the role.

But The National News claims that Rangnick has 'limited say in the matter' and has been asked to concentrate on finishing the season as strongly as possible. United are currently seventh in the Premier League, with the team having won eight, drawn six and lost two of the league games since he took over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Rangnick will have a say on the rebuild of the squad, however, as Bild claims he is an advocate for RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer. The report says the Austria international, who joined Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg in 2017 when Rangnick was their sporting director, has emerged as a summer target for the Old Trafford outfit.

Rangnick might not be a deciding factor in who United appoints but he is certainly trying to have a say in the matter. He has advised the board to plan for the long-term in the transfer market, something that has successfully come to fruition for Man City and Liverpool.

He recently said: "Both teams of Manchester City and Liverpool, those two teams have been built together and recruited over a period of five or six years, all of them under the premises of how do the coaches want to play," adding: "This is what has to happen. That far, I can go right now. I told the board this is what has to happen.

Should Ralf Rangnick have a say in who Manchester United appoint as their new boss? Comment below

"Whenever the new head coach is clear, it has to be: 'How does he want to play and what kind of players do we need for that?' Then we come back to DNA, speed, physicality, tempo -- what do we need? This team does not lack technical players; it can do with more physicality."

Rangnick believes it could take three transfer windows for United to catch up with the likes of Liverpool and Man City, adding: "It takes right decisions and where you want to go to - what kind of players, what kind of manager - and then in every transfer window try to get the best possible. This is possible.

"This is not rocket science. It has to be done, and if that happens, it does not necessarily need three or four years, maybe two or three transfer windows, then the situation could be different."
