Man United told to plot January transfer bid for Chelsea star as 'disrespectful' offer tabled

Manchester United have been told that a move for Edouard Mendy would make 'perfect sense' amid the potential exit of David De Gea. The Chelsea goalkeeper faces an increasingly uncertain future at Stamford Bridge as contract renewal talks stall.

In June, football.london understood that the Blues begun preparing a new deal for Mendy who is currently one of the lowest earners in Graham Potter's first-team squad. Then, in September, it was revealed by the Evening Standard that the Senegal international turned down an opening offer from Chelsea.

Talk of a new deal quietened down until December when The Sun reported that Mendy turned his nose up at a six-year contract offer. The report stated that the shot-stopper felt as if the Blues didn't show the 30-year-old enough 'respect' with how much he was offered.

It was said that higher-ups at Chelsea proceeded to withdraw their initial offer of a long-term deal. Now, talks have reached a standstill with both parties playing hardball now that Kepa Arrizabalaga is preferred between the sticks.

As it stands, Mendy's contract in west London expires in 2025 and he's been identified by Louis Saha as a suitable replacement for De Gea at Old Trafford. As quoted by the Express, the former United and Everton striker said: "De Gea is still right at the top level, but of course making mistakes as he did against Everton is never good.

"Over the years, De Gea has done tremendous performances to save the team and he deserves the time and credit for that. If De Gea doesn’t sign a new contract then a move for Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy would make perfect sense. He has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world the last few years and I’m not sure what happened."

Potter was asked for an update on contract talks with Mendy, the Chelsea boss was coy on the subject. The 47-year-old said: "It's not my place to speak publicly about players' contract situations.

"That's between them and the club. He's been top with us, with me, great guy, happy around the place. In terms of his contract, it's not for me to comment."

Chelsea confirmed on Saturday that Mendy underwent surgery on a fractured finger suffered during this week in training. Therefore, supporters can expect to see Kepa remain between the sticks in the near future.
