Man United step forward with 'new bid' for Erik Ten Hag priority target as Arsenal wait on move

Premier League rivals Manchester United are reportedly preparing a new bid for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez who has been linked with a move to Arsenal.

The Gunners have already seen an initial offer in the region of £35million for the Argentine defender rejected by the Eredivisie champions. Both Mikel Arteta and Erik Ten Hag want Martinez in their squad ahead of next season due to his ability to play at both centre-back and left-back, as well as defensive midfield on occasions.

Ajax are hoping to hold out for a deal closer to £45million for the 24-year-old and United are preparing a new bid for Martinez, according to reports. Arsenal have been busy and are expected to announce their fourth signing of the summer transfer window after agreeing a £45million deal for Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus earlier this week.

The Gunners have already confirmed the signings of Matt Turner, Marquinhos and Fabio Vieira this summer, just three weeks into the transfer window. As reported by The Athletic, Martinez is a priority defensive target for both Arsenal and United ahead of next season with the clubs set to battle for the 24-year-old's signature.

The north Londoners have 'no intention' on giving up the chase for Martinez despite United's interest and are still pushing to sign the Argentina international, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano. Following the Gunners' injury issues in defence last season, Martinez would offer quality cover and strength in depth to Arteta's squad next season.

The Argentine defender's ability to play at left-back and centre-back make him an appealing proposition for the Gunners, with Kieran Tierney, Ben White and Gabriel missing out for periods towards the back end of last season. With United preparing a new bid for the 24-year-old, Arsenal could be forced into accelerating their attempts to bring Martinez to the Emirates with an improved second bid, closer to the asking price set by Ajax.
