Man United’s injury woes continue as Amad Diallo faces season-ending setback

Manchester United have been dealt another significant setback with head coach Ruben Amorim confirming that in-form winger Amad Diallo is likely to miss the remainder of the season due to ankle ligament damage.

The 22-year-old, who has scored six goals in his last 14 appearances, sustained the injury in training and is now facing a lengthy period on the sidelines.

Diallo’s absence is yet another blow for Amorim, whose squad has already been stretched by injuries and illness during a difficult campaign at Old Trafford.

When asked ahead of United’s English Premier League clash with Tottenham on Sunday whether Diallo would be ruled out for the rest of the season, Amorim revealed the devastating blow.

United’s bench was filled with kids with Victor Lindelof the only senior representative outwith the starting XI at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

“I think so,” Amorim told Sky Sports.

“It is what it is but we have the kids, they have the opportunity to be on the bench and they are ready to play. It’s a really hard season and we have to deal with that, and we are doing that.”

The news comes at a time when Diallo had been one of the few bright sparks in an otherwise forgettable season for United. The Ivorian international had finally found his rhythm in the first team after returning from a loan spells at Rangers and Sunderland.

Diallo helped the Ibrox side reach the 2022 UEFA Europa League final and gained valuable experience in Scottish football.

He then went on to make 42 appearances for Sunderland during the 2023/24 campaign, scoring 14 times.

Since returning to Old Trafford, Diallo’s sharp movement and clinical finishing had made him a key figure in United’s attack.

His absence leaves Amorim with even more selection headaches, with the Portuguese coach already contending with injuries to key players such as Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, Manuel Ugarte, Toby Collyer, and Lisandro Martinez - the latter sidelined by an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Christian Eriksen and Leny Yoro are also currently out with illness, adding to United’s woes as they attempt to salvage their league season.

Amorim remained philosophical about the situation, acknowledging the challenges but expressing confidence in the younger members of his squad to step up if needed.

“Sometimes things happen and there are seasons when everything goes wrong at the same time,” he said.

“I know that Amad, if you look at all the big moments, the chances we created, Amad was always there. Maybe we’ll find new ways to create situations.”

He added: “We have young kids with less responsibility, less weight on their shoulders. They are training well, they are good players, so if we need them, we will put the kids in to play. Maybe we’ll find something good in this difficult moment.”
