Man United player ratings vs Man City: Kobbie Mainoo superb in FA Cup final as Raphael Varane makes difference

Manchester United ended a frustrating season on a brilliant note as they stunned Manchester City to lift the FA Cup with a 2-1 win at Wembley.

Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo put United in control at the break, and while Jeremy Doku pulled one back late on, Erik ten Hag’s side held on.

It remains to be seen whether the Dutchman keeps his job, but this was a superb performance to deny City another domestic double.

Here’s how Erik ten Hag’s side rated at Wembley...

Andre Onana 6

Feeling was he would have to have a worldie to give United a chance but had only one routine save to make in first-half. Cracking stop to keep out Walker rasper but then a clanger for Doku to give City a lifeline.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6

Might have released Garnacho quicker on one or two occasions but gave Doku little after winger’s half-time introduction.

Raphael Varane 8

Fit to make his first start since early April. What a difference a wise old head makes. Commanding presence in the air as midfield congestion forced City wide.

Lisandro Martinez 7

Took a chance with nudge on Haaland that might’ve given City a penalty inside a minute but got away with it. Only once lost his man and the bar was his saviour.

Diogo Dalot 6

Excellent in the first-half but found the going tougher after Alvarez’s introduction.

Sofyan Amrabat 7

Feared for him after lack of pace exposed by Foden once early on but much better protected thereafter.

Kobbie Mainoo 8

Defensively diligent, slick and composed on the ball, and took his goal beautifully. A wonderful display, albeit another to tread a fine line when wrestling Haaland. Booked.

Scott McTominay 7

Ran his socks off in dual role as stifling deep midfielder and the man to try to get out to Rodri. Booked after being replaced.

Bruno Fernandes 8

Led the harrying of City’s uncharacteristically sloppy backline in absence of a recognised striker. Moment of genius to set up Mainoo goal.

Alejandro Garnacho 8

Pounced on Gvardiol’s gift to open the scoring and always a threat. Played his part in the second, too. Couldn’t stop Doku getting his strike off but Onana should have kept it out.

Marcus Rashford 8

A point to prove after missing out on the England squad. Walker thwarted his attempts to break in behind but brilliant switch left City stretched for second goal. Put in the hard yards, too.
