Man United great Wayne Rooney has already hinted at response to Everton manager role

Frank Lampard's time as Everton manager has finally come to an end.

The 44-year-old former Chelsea and Manchester City midfielder was sacked on Monday night after a string of bad results that finds the Toffees in the relegation zone. The club's 2-0 loss to David Moyes' West Ham side was the final straw.

Many Everton fans were happy to see Lampard leave, however some believe that the situation at the club behind the scenes makes it impossible for any manager to succeed. Either way, Everton need to get the next appointment right and the process is underway.

LATEST: Every word from Erik Ten Hag's pre-Forest press conference

GOAL is reporting that their next boss could be Wayne Rooney. According to the report, Everton have made informal contact with their former player with a view for him to take over from Lampard at Goodison Park. Rooney had two spells at Everton as a player, either side of his time with Manchester United where he became the club's record goalscorer overtaking Sir Bobby Charlton.

However, the report states that Rooney - who is in charge of MLS side DC United - has serious reservations about taking the job just six months into his current role in the USA.

Rooney started his managerial career with Derby County in the Championship having finished his playing days there.. The 37-year-old gained plaudits for nearly saving the side from relegation in the 2021/22 campaign despite the club receiving a 21-point deduction at the start of the season.

During his time at Derby, the former England striker revealed he turned down the chance to manage Everton before Lampard's appointment 12 months ago, but added he felt ready to manage in the Premier League. "Everton approached my agent and asked me to interview for the job," he said at the time. "But I turned it down. I believe I will be a Premier League manager and I am ready for that 100 per cent. But I have a job at Derby, which is important to me."

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher took aim at Everton and their owner Farhad Moshiri during Sky Sport's Monday Night football, saying: "Moshiri doesn't know what he's doing, but he's got a lot of money.

"The same sorts of players are getting brought in, managers are getting changed left, right and centre. Why does every Everton manager fail? Lampard, Champions League winning managers like (Rafa) Benitez and (Carlo) Ancelotti, (Marco) Silva, (Ronald) Koeman has been around the world. So when a club fails, you have to look at the top. It's a mess."

Rooney isn't the only name linked with the Everton job - Sean Dyche and Marcelo Bielsa are also believed to be names of interest to the Goodison Park board.
