Man United great Roy Keane flew home from World Cup as other pundits were 'getting on his nerves'

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has revealed that he flew home halfway though the World Cup after the pundits he is working alongside began to 'get on his nerves'.

Keane is working for broadcaster ITV in Qatar and has been joined by Gary Neville, Graeme Souness, Joe Cole and Nigel de Jong and others on the UK channel.

The Irishman has already covered a number of matches in the Middle East and is expected to feature heavily for the remainder of the tournament - with the World Cup currently at the quarter-finals stage.

As well as his punditry duties, Keane has also joined Neville and Micah Richards, who is working for the BBC, to discuss the tournament as part of a Sky Bet series.

In the latest episode, which was released on Thursday, United legend Keane admitted he had flown home during the tournament due to his relationships with the other pundits.

"I think it's been OK. It's not been bad. Even if you're not working, gone to one or two games just as a football fan. We've been here three weeks remember. It's been fine," he said when Richards asked how he had found the tournament so far.

Neville interrupted, saying: "Roy went home for four or five days as well actually. Went back." Keane then explained: "I had a break. I needed a break. My tolerance levels [were starting to go]. People getting on my nerves."

Richards quickly asked: "Name names, who was getting on your nerves?"

However, Keane refused to reveal which pundits had been annoying him, stating: "How long have we got? How long have we got? Fellow pundits. I had a break."

Neville, who played alongside Keane at Old Trafford, insisted that he was not one of the people the Irishman had an issue with. He said: "It wasn't me though.

"I can see when the tank's filling up, it's like one of those challenges in I'm a Celebrity Micah with Roy. You can see when the tank's coming up to his head. You've got to get out of there."

Keane jokingly replied: "You're very cruel." Though he did not reveal who he had fallen out with, Keane has had a number of bust-ups during the tournament so far.

The former United midfielder clashed with Liverpool legend Graeme Souness over a penalty decision in Argentina's group stage game again Saudi Arabia, with the pair disagreeing on the call.
