Man travels across world to meet girlfriend for first time - then gets killed by car

A man who travelled across the world to meet his girlfriend for the first time was killed in a road accident just five days later.

Stefan Mattias from Stockholm, fell in love with Veeranuch Buthinkong following an online romance and promised to fly her back to 'a big house in Europe'.

The 50-year-old holidaymaker arrived in Thailand and travelled to 27-year-old Veeranuch's home in remote Roi Et province in the northeast of Thailand.

However, he was riding a motorcycle owned by her family when he lost control and crashed into a roadside ditch on Saturday, January 28 shortly before 2.30pm local time.

His neck was broken, and he had head wounds and a deep cut on his right leg.

Devastated Veeranuch collapsed in tears at her boyfriend's dead body.

She said: "My heart is broken. My boyfriend was only here for five days.

"He was rich and he was going to take care of me in a big house. Now I have nothing.

"I told him to be careful while he was riding. I cannot believe he has gone so quickly. I am so shocked."

Veeranuch said that she found Stefan on social media around two years ago and they began chatting. Soon they were messaging and calling each other every day - with the Swede promising her a better life.

He took a leave from his job and flew from Sweden to meet her for the first time.

They agreed to live together and planned to fly back to Sweden together with a blessing from her relatives.

On the day of the incident, Stefan finished his lunch before riding his motorcycle to see the surrounding area.

A nearby resident said that they did not see the incident but they heard the sound of a motorcycle followed shortly after by the crash.

Police Lieutenant Tharathip Wijarn rushed to the scene with a doctor from Suwannaphum Hospital and paramedics after receiving the emergency call.

The scene of the accident was a curve around six kilometres from Veeranuch's village.

Policeman Tharathip said: "We suspect that Mr Mattias was not familiar with the route and rode too fast. His body will be taken to the hospital for a post-mortem examination."

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records.
