A 61-year-old man who allegedly attacked his 74-year-old friend with an axe on the Gold Coast has been granted bail.

Myrent John Henare was charged with serious assault of a person over 60 and going armed so as to cause fear.

Acting Chief Superintendent Rhys Wildman said the alleged incident happened in the backyard of a property in Labrador at 2pm on Sunday.

The 74-year-old is said to have suffered deep cuts during the incident.

"Luckily the injuries were defensive in nature and non-life threatening," Acting Chief Superintendent Wildman, said.

"That male was still transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital for treatment."

Police said the 74-year-old man remained in hospital.

Mr Henare's lawyer James Grehan told the Southport Magistrates Court that his client worked in construction and had no criminal history.

"It seems that whatever happened on that day was out of character," he said.

"There was no other witnesses to this incident. It seems as though all parties were intoxicated."

Magistrate Janice Crawford granted the 61-year-old bail under the condition he not contact the other man.

The matter will be mentioned in Southport Magistrates Court on June 14.
