Man tells of moment he rushed to help stabbing victim following 'baseball bat and knife' attack

A man has told of the moment he rushed to help a stabbing victim following a horrifying knife attack in Tameside.

A man in his 20s suffered serious injuries after being stabbed in the chest during the 'targeted' attack in Grange Road North, Hyde, on Sunday evening. People living near to the scene said they saw a group of men armed with baseball bats and knives 'smashing a car up' just moments earlier.

"I thought it was a house being raided at first," said one man, who asked not to be named. "People were yelling at each other.

"There were three lads smashing a car up and attacking the people in it. They were running round with baseball bats and knives."

The man said he and his son rushed out to help the bleeding victim and give him first aid.

"He was very pale and lost quite a lot of blood," he added. "We were trying to keep him awake.

"He kept drifting in and out of consciousness. There was another lad who looked like he had broken his leg."

Police were called to the scene at about 11.55pm. The man was taken to hospital for further treatment but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, say Greater Manchester Police.

A stretch of Grange Road North was taped off at the junction with Walker Lane following the incident. Police remained at the scene on Monday morning and a forensic tent was in place next to a mini-roundabout.

A woman, who lives just yards from the scene, said she heard people shouting outside her home around the time of the incident.

"I heard a bang," she said. "I got up and looked out of the window because I thought somebody had gone into my fence.

“There was somebody running down the road. There were three cars and one of them screeched off.

"I was really worried. This used to be a nice area but it's been getting bad recently."

Another man said he heard 'raised voices' shortly before police and paramedics descended on the street.

"I didn't think it was anything serious," he said. "I went to get ready for bed and saw all the blue flashing lights.

"There was somebody lay on the floor. The paramedics turned up and were here quite a while."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 11:55pm last night (Sunday 7 May) Greater Manchester Police were called to reports of a serious assault at Grange Road North, Hyde.
