A man driving an allegedly stolen Audi led police on a dangerous chase along Northbourne Avenue where he was eventually Tasered and arrested, ACT police said.
The driver was found asleep in the grey Audi Q3 which was parked on the side of the Barton Highway in Mitchell about 5am.
Police said he had left the engine running and officers patrolling the area saw the car parked in the shoulder.
"Police successfully deployed tyre deflation devices before approaching the driver side of the vehicle and finding the man asleep in the driver's seat," an ACT Policing spokesperson said.
She said officers tried arresting the 30-year-old man but he drove off towards the city along Northbourne Avenue.
"Police initiated a pursuit and followed the Audi along Northbourne Avenue and into the CBD," they said.
The Audi allegedly crossed the median strip and was seen moving into oncoming traffic.
The man is accused of deliberately ramming into a marked police vehicle parked at the intersection of Macarthur Avenue and Northbourne Avenue about 5.45am.
Police said he allegedly drove into the vehicle again and reversed into a second police car that tried to block his path.
The spokesperson said police used a Taser on the driver to ensure he complied with their directions.
The man was removed from the Audi and searched by officers who allegedly found a substance believed to be methamphetamine on his person.
Residents in the area were awoken by the commotion before 6am.
One user posted a photo of the incident on social media platform Reddit while a commenter described hearing the Audi "running on a flat tyre".
The driver, a 30-year-old Hackett resident, is charged with offences including three counts of driving a vehicle at police, two counts of damaging a police vehicle, failing to stop for police, driving with a suspended licence and driving a vehicle without consent.
The man appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday afternoon. He did not apply for bail and did not enter any pleas.
