Man taken to hospital after suffering 'serious leg injury' in car and motorbike crash in Sunderland

A man was taken to hospital after suffering a "serious leg injury" following a crash in Sunderland involving a car and a motorbike.

Emergency services were called to a collision involving a motorbike and a car on the A1290 near the Northern Spire Bridge shortly before 12pm on Wednesday. Northumbria Police, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and the North East Ambulance Service all attended the scene.

A man in his 50s was treated at the scene for a serious leg injury and the ambulance service confirmed they took one patient to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) for further treatment. The eastbound road was closed for more than an hour while emergency services dealt with the incident.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 12pm today (Wednesday), we were alerted to a collision involving a motorbike and a car on the A1290 near the Northern Spire Bridge. A man in his 50s was treated at the scene for a serious leg injury."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 11.49am this morning to reports of a road traffic incident involving a scooter and a car on the A1920 Riverside Road, Sunderland. We dispatched one ambulance crew, one rapid response paramedic, one specialist paramedic, and two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART). One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) for further treatment."

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene and assisted police and paramedics. A spokesperson confirmed: "We can confirm that two crews attended a four-vehicle road traffic collision in Sunderland.

"Our Fire Control team received a call at 11.52 this morning, and two appliances from Marley Park and Sunderland Central Community Fire Stations were sent to the scene located outside of Sunderland Enterprise Park on the A1290 Wessington Way. The collision involved a motorcycle, two cars, and a van.

"Our crews assisted at the scene with other blue light colleagues from North East Ambulance Service and Northumbria Police by making safe the vehicles and the surrounding area. The appliances left the scene at 12.53."
