Man taken to hospital after crash in South Bristol

One man has been taken to hospital after a car overturned and crashed into a tree as it was being driven down a key main road into South Bristol.

All three emergency services were called to the scene of the collision, which took place on the eastbound side of the Winterstoke Road dual carriageway, between Sainsbury's and the Parson Street junction in Ashton Gate.

The road, the main A3029 into South Bristol from the west, was closed for motorists heading east towards Parson Street for more than an hour as fire, police and ambulance dealt with the scene of the crash.

The incident caused widespread traffic congestion on Winterstoke Road and on diversion routes along Duckmoor Road and Luckwell Road in Bedminster, and on the South Bristol Link Road, as motorists sought to avoid the area.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset police said they were initially called to the collision at 4.20pm. The crash involved two vehicles, both being driven down Winterstoke Road towards the climbing centre in Ashton. The driver of one vehicle was uninjured, but a man in the vehicle that overturned suffered non-serious injuries, and was taken to hospital, police said.

Police and ambulance crews remained on the scene for more than an hour, as the black-coloured vehicle remained on its roof and wedged up against a tree in the central reservation of the dual carriageway, close to the HMS Flying Fox naval reserve base.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two crews from Bedminster were called at 4.27pm to reports of a road traffic collision on Winterstoke Road.

"On arrival, firefighters found an RTC involving two vehicles, one vehicle has overturned and left the roadway. The road has been closed after the junction of Gore’s Marsh Road. Police and ambulance colleagues are also on the scene," she added.

The collision is the latest in a series of crashes on this short stretch of the A3029 Winterstoke Road.

In December 2020, a fatal crash around 100 yards from the spot of today's incident, claimed the life of local man Patrick Hegarty, and in July this year, a motorcyclist was rushed to hospital following a collision with a car being driven along Winterstoke Road.

Winterstoke Road, between Sainsbury's and the Parson Street gyratory - and especially the junction with Luckwell Road - was named among the 11 worst junctions in Bristol, by Bristol Live readers in early 2020.
