Man swarmed by gang and attacked with bats

A man was hospitalised after being attacked by a gang armed with bats.

The man was attacked by a group of four men, armed with bats, on Laird Street, Birkenhead. Witnesses reported seeing a man "covered head to toe in blood" being attacked on Thursday at around 7.20pm, while the road was still busy.

After the attack the suspects then fled the scene, driving up Thorneycroft Road away from the incident. The victim suffered a head injury and was taken to hospital after the incident.

A police investigation into the attack is now underway. Forensic examinations are currently taking place and CCTV captured near the area of the incident is being analysed.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police told the ECHO: "We are appealing for more information after a man was assaulted in Birkenhead last night (Thursday 27 October).

"It was reported at around 7.20pm that a man had been attacked by a group of four men armed with bats on Laird Street. The suspects then drove away from the incident up Thorneycroft Road.

"The man suffered an injury to his head and was taken to hospital shortly after the incident. An investigation is underway and forensic examinations are taking place and CCTV is being analysed in the area."
