A man who was viciously attacked by a mother and her son suffered a bleed on the brain, a court has heard.
Alan Cameron was punched in the face by Donna Hand before her son Callum and his friend Mark Webster kicked and stamped on him.
Mr Cameron was later sedated in hospital where he was treated for a bleed to the brain, reports the Echo.
Donna Hand then lied to police when they knocked at her son's home address in St Helens and asked where her son was following the attack, Sarah Griffin, prosecuting, told Liverpool Crown Court.
Ms Griffin told a hearing how Callum Hand, 21, and Webster had been out for a walk with Mr Cameron and returned to Silkstone Close at around 11pm on August 1, 2020.
When Donna Hand saw her son she noticed bruising to his face.
The 50-year-old then left her house followed by her son. She went up to Mr Cameron and punched him in the face.
Ms Griffin then described how Callum Hand and Webster, 32, launched an attack on Mr Cameron. Mr Cameron's partner Lisa Greenall said that she thought he was dead after the two men left him "covered in blood."
Ms Greenall had said that Mr Cameron had been drinking with Hand and Webster earlier in the day. She said that the men also smoked some cannabis before going for a walk on the night of August 1.
Mr Cameron was rushed to hospital with a bleed to the brain after the street attack. When police arrived they put a cordon in place.
Ms Griffin said that an officer at the scene was approached by Webster, who asked if 'the lad was alright.' The officer noticed that Webster's face was marked and asked him if he had been involved in the fight.
Webster responded by saying ‘Well yeah there was a bit of a fight but I never hit him’. Webster was then arrested and put in the back of a police car.
The court heard how Webster managed to free one of the handcuffs and got out of the police car before running off down Silkstone Close. Officers used a pepper spray to detain him.
Webster later told police that Callum Hand had been responsible for the attack, which was over '100 diazepam.' When police attended Hand's home his mum Donna answered the door.
When she was asked when she had last seen her son, she lied to the police telling them she hadn’t seen him since about half ten that morning.
Police returned around 30 minutes later and arrested Donna Hand on suspicion of assault. In reply she told another lie to the police stating ‘I’ve been here with my mum’.
Her son was arrested when he approached the police cordon at around 1.55am on August 2. He remained silent during a police interview.
The court heard that Mr Cameron died on June 17 2021. Judge Neil Flewitt, QC said that his death was not linked to the injuries he suffered in the attack on August 1 2020.
Judge Flewitt told Callum Hand what he 'repeatedly kicked and stamped on' Mr Cameron. He told Hand that he was responsible for the serious head injuries that Mr Cameron suffered.
Hand, of Silkstone Close in St Helens, had pleaded guilty to GBH with intent. He was jailed for 40 months.
Webster, who pleaded guilty to affray, was jailed for 21 months suspended for two years. Webster admitted kicking Mr Cameron twice.
Judge Flewitt ordered him to attend a mental health treatment course for six months, undertake 40 days of rehabilitation and complete 120 hours of unpaid work.
Donna Hand, also of Silkstone Close, was jailed for three months suspended for 12 months. She was ordered her to complete a 25 day rehabilitation course.
Judge Flewitt told Hand that if she started 'anymore fights' she would be jailed.
Callum Hand had a previous conviction for possession of a knife and assault. Webster had previous convictions for battery and possession of a knife. Donna Hand had two previous convictions for assault.
