The driver of the car remained at the scene to help with enquiries. The road was closed for a number of hours while investigations were carried out.

Speaking after the incident, roads policing sergeant Amy Murray said: "We’re continuing to investigate the circumstances behind this collision, which has left a man in a critical condition. His family are being supported by specialist officers and our thoughts go out to them at such a difficult time.

"As a matter of priority, we’d like to speak to anyone who was passing the golf club at around 3.45pm on Sunday afternoon, and has any images or footage from dashcam or other devices which may assist.
