Man still fighting for life after being stabbed in street

A man remains in critical condition after being stabbed in the street.

Merseyside Police were called to Riston Street, at the junction of Lodge Lane on Saturday at around 10.50pm after a man in his 20s was stabbed. The man was taken to hospital by ambulance in a critical condition.

The suspect was reported to have left the scene, with police putting a cordon in place along Lodge Lane and on Riston Street. An investigation is underway and officers remain in the area to carry out forensic, CCTV, house-to-house and witness enquiries.

The force has added high visibility patrols will also be in the area to reassure the local community. On Monday evening (March 6) police gave an update to The ECHO to say the man remains in a critical condition, but is described as stable.

Detective Chief Inspector John Fitzgerald said: “Enquiries are in the very early stages to establish what has taken place and the victim’s family have been made aware. Lodge Lane would have been busy at the time of this incident, and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at around 10.30pm onwards and saw what happened to please contact us.

“I would also ask people who were in the area to check dashcam or CCTV footage just in case they may have captured something which may be vital to the case.”

DCI Fitzgerald added: “Reducing knife crime in Merseyside is a priority all year round. Our officers are committed in removing anyone who stores, carries and uses weapons through proactive use of stop and search powers, open land searches, warrants and education work alongside partners.

“We continue to seek out those involved in knife crime, enticing young and vulnerable people to carry weapons or involved in gangs.”

People living close by have also expressed their shock and dismay after the young man was found with stab wounds.

John Williams, 35, of Aspen Grove, said he had no idea about the incident until reading about it in The ECHO.

He said: "I didn't even know until yesterday morning that police were there - I went to the shop and the road was closed off. I have read it was a stabbing, and I've never known anything like it around here.

"In a city, these things do happen. It's a bustling area, it's very busy, but always friendly. It's always vibrant, and for me this feels very out of character for the area."

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "Crime is more serious these days than it has been. A man was shot in the head a few months ago, and there was a lad a few years ago who got shot down Smithdown Road."

Pap Suli, owner of Pap's Barbershop - the only shop between Aspen Grove and Vandyke Street to remain open, just outside the police cordon - said: "Police were here all day yesterday. None of the businesses can open, and since the road is closed no one is coming by. At the moment, I don't know what's going on and they can't tell me how long it will take.

"I heard what had happened yesterday. When I came in the morning, the whole road was shut."
