Man stabbed rival, blow for Hooters plans and thug ran over officer

These are the latest ECHO headlines this morning.

Man pleaded to his uncle 'take me to France' after stabbing rival

A Sutton Leach man armed himself with a 12-inch chopping knife and stabbed his rival while he cowered in the back seat of a car.

Steven Arnold, 23, opened the door of Jack Williams' white Vauxhall Corsa and stabbed him three times in the leg at around 7.35am on May 15, on Jubits Lane, St Helens.

He then fled the scene and went to see his uncle, telling him: "Take me to France, I've done something stupid and I'm going to jail."

Instead, his uncle drove him to St Helens police station, then turned him in to police officers at the scene of the crime.

Arnold, of Catterall Avenue, pleaded guilty to one count of s18 wounding and one count of possession of a bladed article in a public place at Liverpool Crown Court today. Rebecca Smith, defending, said: "Unfortunately the events of the early hours of May 15 completely snowballed out of control and led to Steven Arnold to behave in a way he's certainly not proud of."

The court heard that, at around 5am on May 15 following a night out, Arnold's female friend got into a fight with his ex-girlfriend, and that Arnold had become involved and slapped his ex. Read the full story here.

Blow for Hooters as plans rejected by council

Hooters has suffered a blow in its plans to open in Liverpool.

The American chain, which serves beer and bar food and employs scantily-clad waitresses, is expected to open a branch in Liverpool soon. It will be located in New Zealand House on Water Street - the site which used to be Newz Bar.

Hooters in Liverpool has split opinion since it was first mooted. Mayor Joanne Anderson is among those who are against its arrival, saying: "Hooters has an infamous sexually objectifying and misogynistic environment".

But after being granted a license to operate, work has been ongoing at the New Zealand House site, however the plans have hit a stumbling block.

Liverpool Council's planning department have rejected plans for the signs that would be erected at the Hooters venue. The application sought permission to display two illuminated signs, a fixed banner and a new flag outside the restaurant.

City centre councillor Nick Small objected to the planned signs, claiming they would be "belong more in Amsterdam's Red Light District than Liverpool's oldest conservation area." He added: "The proposed signage, banner and flag is bright, gaudy and not within keeping of the character of the area." Read more here.

Police reps disgusted at 'low sentence' handed to thug who drove van over officer

Police representatives reacted with disappointment after a thug who ran over an officer in an attempt to avoid justice was jailed for less than three years.

Umar Anwar, 31, was sat behind the wheel of a white Ford transit van when two Merseyside Police constables tried to speak to him in St Helens, after a member of the public had found a bag containing cannabis and a quantity of cash.

But when one of the officers told him they intended to carry out a drugs search, he slammed the accelerator down dragging PC Dan Parr along the road, who screamed in agony as his legs and pelvic area went under the wheels.

Liverpool Crown Court heard how PC Parr was left in "excruciating pain" and feared he would never walk again. He suffered a dislocated shoulder and a broken wrist, and has remained signed off work.

Anwar, of Birkdale Road, Rochdale, was jailed for 30 months after admitting causing serious injury by dangerous driving, but will serve only half of that sentence in custody before being automatically released on licence. A passenger in the van, 27-year-old Ahmmad Anwar, of Deeplish Road, Rochdale, was jailed for four years for possessing cocaine and cannabis with intent to supply. Read the full story here.
