Man broke leg during fight in Mathew Street bar

A man suffered a broken leg during a brawl at a Mathew Street bar.

Merseyside Police were called to Legends Bar on Mathew Street this evening, Saturday, June 24 following reports of a disturbance. Officers attending the bar found a man had a broken leg while a second man, 39, was reported to have suffered a stab wound.

However police have since confirmed the injury he suffered to the buttock area was not a stab wound. Both injured parties were taken to hospital where they will be treated for their injuries. Crime scene investigators are carrying out forensic examinations at the scene and detectives are carrying out enquiries in the local area.

They will be looking at CCTV footage to establish what happened during the incident which happened earlier this evening. Images sent to the ECHO showed an extensive police presence on the famous street which was filled with punters out enjoying Saturday night.

Originally a large number of police vehicles flooded the area and cordoned off part of the street next top clothing store Reiss. Later an eyewitness told the ECHO officers appeared to be carrying out a fingertip search looking for evidence.

Inspector Nathan Stockley said: "The full circumstances of what happened are being pieced together by detectives. There were a large number of people at the pub and in the Mathew Street area who may have witnessed the disturbance, the lead up to it and the assaults, which left two men injured.

"It is important that people come forward and tell us what happened. The use of violence in our communities will not be tolerated by Merseyside Police and I would urge anyone who saw anything that could help us, to please come forward."
