Pictures sent to the Record showed officers standing guard outside the new Tesco Express store on the corner of Gordon Street and Union Street.

It's understood police remained at the scene for several hours and their enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses.

A Police Spokesperson said: “Around 3.05pm on Tuesday, March 7, police received a report of a disturbance in Gordon Street, resulting in one man being seriously assaulted. The man has been taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and enquiries are ongoing.”

Constable Craig Whyte, of Greater Glasgow CID, added: “Our enquiries into this incident are at an early stage and I am appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the assault to get in touch.

“As the incident happened close to a road we are also appealing for drivers with dashcams to review footage to establish if their cameras have captured the incident.

“Anyone with information that may assist our investigation should contact 101, quoting reference 2141 of March 7. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
