Man stabbed by gang as families enjoy sun and children play in park

A man was stabbed by a gang in broad daylight as families played in a park nearby.

Police were called to Priory Road in Anfield today, Saturday, April 8, at around 4.20pm to reports a man, in his 20s, had sustained injuries to his face and leg following a stabbing. The man was found nearby and taken to hospital for his injuries, which are not thought to be life threatening.

A group of men suspected of carrying out the attack fled through Anfield Cemetery. When the ECHO attended the scene a cordon was in place at the entrance of the cemetery, at one of the entrances of Stanley Park and surrounding railings opposite Anfield Cemetery.

Forensics were also at the scene, as well as detectives and a number of police officers. There were also many families enjoying the Easter weekend sun in Stanley Park and children playing.

Police said they are in the early stages of their investigation and officers have carried out forensic, CCTV, house-to-house and witness inquiries.

Chief Inspector Phil Cowin said: “Enquiries are in the very early stages to establish what has taken place. Priory Road would have been busy at the time of this incident, and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at around 4.20pm onwards and saw what happened to please contact us.

“I would also ask people who were in the area to check dashcam or CCTV footage just in case they may have captured something which may be vital to the case. Reducing knife crime in Merseyside is a priority all year round.

"Our officers are committed to removing anyone who stores, carries and uses weapons through proactive use of stop and search powers, open land searches, warrants and education work alongside partners.

“We continue to seek out those involved in knife crime, enticing young and vulnerable people to carry weapons or involved in gangs.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 101, DM @MerPolCC or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting reference 23000298210.
